Calling all Artists – from Carla Tamburro

Park Point Art Fair

Calling all Artists,

You are invited to apply for the 46th annual Park Point Art Fair on June 25 and 26, 2016 at The Park Point Recreation Area in Duluth, MN. We are accepting applications in the following categories of visual art: painting, printmaking, mixed media 2-D and 3-D, photography, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, glass, wood and jewelry, beggining December 15, 2015 at https://www.zapplication.org/event-info.php?ID=4639. You can also access zapplication from our website http://www.parkpointartfair.org/artist-information/how-to-apply/ where you can learn more about the event.

In its 46th year the art fair is well established, well organized and well liked by area artists for its ease of set-up, hospitality and consistent sales. Each year The Park Point Art Fair draws over 10,000 visitors to Park Point, a beautiful natural setting tucked between the lake and the bay, where they can buy art from our region’s finest artists.

Artists are treated to an awards dinner Saturday evening where the community recognizes their excellence with cash prizes of over $1300.00 In addition to great hospitality, we know that half our attendees are going to purchase art and that we succeed in attracting art buyers in higher income brackets who return year after year drawn by the quality and variety of the work. Our attendees especially enjoy getting to know the artists through conversation and repeat visits. This is the Duluth art fair you do not want to miss, at the start of our tourist season, when little competes with this much anticipated event. You are more likely to succeed here and have a good time while you are at it.

Artists can apply at https://www.zapplication.org/event-info.php?ID=4639.
The application process is currently open.
The Application fee is $25.00
Final application due date is March 15, 2016

  • This drop off is designated specifically for brush from within the Park Point area.
  • The City urges people to not bring in brush from other areas of the city and encourages the public, outside the quarantine area, to use the compost site at the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, http://wlssd.com/services/yard-waste/
  • Link to press release http://duluthmn.gov/web-subscriptions/View-press-release/?prid=3942

Park Point residents are prohibited from removing any wood or wood parts off of the Point hence the need to contain wood products within the quarantined area.

  • The MDA has extensive information for residents and a specially created hotline to pose questions or concerns about EAB. People can call Arrest the Pest, at 888-545-6684. Those attending the upcoming meeting will have an opportunity to listen to presentations on EAB, hear about local plans to deal with the insect, and learn how residents can limit the spread of the bug. Experts from the MDA, city of Duluth, University of Minnesota, and other state and federal partner agencies will be available to answer questions.

The public will also have an opportunity to provide input on the adoption of a formal EAB quarantine of Park Point. An emergency quarantine was placed on the area when EAB was discovered.

The MDA will take comments on the formal quarantine from November 30, 2015 – January 15, 2016 and proposes to adopt the quarantine on February 1, 2016. The quarantine limits the movement of ash trees and limbs, and hardwood firewood off of Park Point. The proposed quarantine language can be found atwww.mda.state.mn.us/eab. Emerald ash borer larvae kill ash trees by tunneling under the bark and feeding on the part of the tree that moves nutrients up and down the trunk. Minnesota is highly susceptible to the destruction caused by invasive insect. The state has approximately one billion ash trees, the most of any state in the nation. For more information on emerald ash borer, go to www.mda.state.mn.us/eab.

Lafayette Community Edible Garden News

Coral McDonnell was recently recognized for her significant contributions to the community garden at Lafayette. This poem was recited at the garden celebration potluck dinner on November 15th at Lafayette. Thank you, Coral!

By Cornelia Dacey

Here’s to our gracious, vivacious Coral Jean

Hard working, energetic she’s our garden queen

She lets us know when it is time to sow

Time to harvest and time to wrap up before snow

When she calls for worker bees, she’s the first one to show

Planting, pulling weeds, whatever the garden needs to grow.

No matter the chore she’s there with a grin,

Sleeves rolled up and working like sin

We pepper her with questions as if she was Google

Instead of using our very own noodle

She is always helpful and never ever mean

We salute you, Coral Jean, our garden queen

The meeting on Thursday, Oct. 15 will include a the discussion of the resolution that will be on the agenda at November’s meeting.

Resolution to change the regular monthly meeting date of the Park Point Community Club from the third Thursday to the third Tuesday of each month.

From this month’s Breeze:

Time to Change a Long-time Tradition?

At the August 20th Community Club Meeting, a proposal was made to

change PPCC meeting nights from the third Thursday of each month to the

third Tuesday. As the present scheduling is specified in the Club’s bylaws,

such an alteration would require a vote of approval from the membership.

This proposal has been considered numerous times over the past

several years, although specific action had not been taken prior to the

August meeting, when attendees moved to post this recommendation in

the Breeze. The reasoning behind such an adjustment is that our City

Councilors are currently unable to attend PPCC meetings due to schedul-
ing complications of their own; they are required to attend agenda-setting

sessions on Thursdays. The hope is that altering the meeting night might

encourage greater participation in Park Point issues on the part of City

Councilors. Those members present on August 20th voted to post this

suggestion in the Breeze, with further discussion planned for the October

15th meeting.

From our bylaws:

XIV. Regular Monthly Meetings shall be held in the Community Club center, on the third (3rd) Thursday of each month, and shall start promptly at 7:00 PM.

  1. Regular monthly meetings shall not be held outside of the Community Club Center nor on a date and/or time other than on the third (3rd) Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM, unless
  1. The Club President decides that a change in date, time and/or location of the regular meeting is required, and providing
  1. That not less than one (1) week before such change of the regular meeting’s time, location, and/or date, the membership of the Club is notified in writing, or by other type of public announcement, of the changes to be made.

XXI. Amendments.

Bylaws of the Club may be amended in the following manner:

  1. Amendments must be proposed in writing at a regular monthly meeting, after the membership has been advised by public notice one week prior to the meeting that an amendment to the Constitution and Bylaws would be considered at that particular meeting.

     2. After discussion and explanation of the proposed amendment (s), the membership shall vote at the                next regular meeting, a 2/3 affirmative vote of those present is required to adopt an amendment (s).
